Today I am back with a fun art journal using distress oxide sprays! New products in use are lots of fun and these sprays are the best to create backgrounds for your mixed media projects. So here is what I came up with:

The new distress oxide sprays are shipping today along with other new goodies by Tim Holtz, and you can find all the links you need if you scroll down.

I love how easy it is to use them to create gorgeous backgrounds in no time. They have properties that you don’t get with the original distress sprays. These are not translucent, they don’t blend as you build up layers so they are easier to work with without creating mud. Plus?! they react with water to give you that wonderful chalky finish.

For the background I used 3 colors of distress oxide inks mermaid lagoon, vintage photo and peeled paint. Check the photo below to see how the blue spray stays on top  of the brown one… look at those splashes! Yummy!

To add even more visual texture on the background I did some stenciling using the sprays and paste over the gradient square stencil. I also did some stamping using the new distress colors of archival ink.

For the collage I used cut outs from the Botanical pack. All the flowers, leaves and the bird come from this pack. Check the video to see how I created the branch.

I like to add motivational quotes on my pages, other people like to journal on it. Do what you like! The quotes come from the Quote Chips pack. I keep using these quotes on my pages and the pack goes on and on, there are seriously so many in it… I have it for years now and can’t use it all up!

  1. Love this page and especially the quotes. I haven’t invested in oxide ink, but when I saw the sprays at Creativation I thought maybe I’ll give them a try. I’m curious about the chalky finish I hear about and like. With all the moisture (from sprays and water) on the paper it didn’t look like it saturated the paper. Is that because you used a heavy weight paper??? And the colors seemed to fade back after they dried. It looks like they become transparent? One of my other favorites from Tim Holtz this year is the Ranger permanent ink in distress colors!!! SO glad. Several times I’ve wished for that … and now they’re here! Thanks for showcasing these products today. I just love your art journal videos. I’ve slowly been trying some art journal and mixed media projects myself, but still feel it’s going outside of my comfort zone (a good thing). I still really struggle with layering the background. Your videos always provide encouragement, inspiration and tips … as well as the reminder to just play! Thank you so much, Vicky.

  2. This is spectacular, Vicky! I love the little peeks of the flowers underneath. I thought you painted everything – that ephemera pack has great pieces and you created a beautiful project that inspired me to try the techniques.

  3. Stunning page Vicky. I love to see you using the Oxide sprays. The black stenciling in the background looks like cutouts in the paper.
Thank you so much for showing this piece of art.

  4. Beautiful page and, as always, I enjoy how you explain your process in the video. I’ve never used sprays on my projects, but like the idea of adapting inks for my projects.

  5. Another one of your awesome videos, Vicky! I did order a few of the new oxide sprays, because I agree that they will go out of stock quickly, and I didn’t want to wait for more to come in! But I forgot about the new mini archivals! I love having them in little inkpads so they don’t dry out on me! Love this newest page in your art journal, and hope to give some of your techniques here a try myself—especially the way you sprayed the oxides and water, all the layers, and the folded up sides of your papers. Wonderful!

  6. Beautiful art journal page. The sprays look as fantastic as the ink. Can,t wait to try them. Thank you for the great tips. Love your videos.

  7. I love watching you create your journal pages they are so colorful and interesting. I saw the punch you were using and checked the supply list to see if it was among the listed things. Could you direct me to an older post that may have the information on the punch and rings you use? Thanks.

  8. Love your work. The disc bound journal you used in the video. Was that something you made or bought? Where can the punch used in this video be bought? Thanks for sharing your art.?
