Hi! Today I am sharing an art journal layout that smells summer. The weather here is warm and sunny and the schools close tomorrow. So we are almost ready to move to our summer house just like every year. I just can’t wait to spend my days at the beach !

So here is my layout:

and I am totally in love with the background! All the waves, the bubbles, the splashes…. I had so much fun making it.

Here is a close up on the “water”

For shading I used my favorite techniques with my big brush markers but this time I used my distress inks and stains as well!

To create all the texture on the seahorses I used my distress inks and a stamp. Aren’t they adorable?

I just love the reach colors, the theme and the techniques I used in this layout.

  1. Beautiful, as always, Vicky! Just wondering about the journal you are using. You said that you were using it because you were going to be using a lot of liquid and the pages of that journal are really thick. Does that mean that you didn’t glue two of the pages together this time?

    1. No, I did not glue two pages together. This is an art journal that is specifically designed for liquid mediums. The pages do not curl and the pains do not bleed thought! Just perfect!

  13. I love how you created the bubbles! The water effect is gorgeous. I can’t wait to try the micro glaze as, like you, I like to use multiple types of mediums and distress inks were difficult to work in. Thanks the journal layout video!

  14. I am addicted (in a good way) to your videos. I usually watch them two or three times to get every bit of inspiration. You truly make some of the best layouts and designs. Your use of colors is wonderful. Enjoy the salty water and thanks for the ideas.

  16. Vicky, I am always so inspired of your work. You are also an enabler LOL! I’ve recently bought 13 Faber-Castell Big Brush Markers from DickBlick.com! I’m currently working on my own journal right now with the theme of 4th of July. Thanks so much for sharing your love of art! Greece just sounds so darn romantic…….then add in the beach?!?!…….*sigh* Enjoy your summer lady!

  17. This was just what I needed to see for my scrapbooking….simply inspiring! Love everthing you have done! Thank you.

All layouts have been inspired by you. I am always learning new techniques from you and discovering all the products I need. Thank you so very very much.

  19. I love to watch your fantastic use of a variety of stamps in the most interesting ways! Your uses of a variety of products stimulate ideas for use in my own cardmaking and scrapbooking work. Thanks for the inspiration your blog has been to me!

  20. Vicky, I love your videos. The water looks great. You did not gesso the pages first, correct? Thanks for sharing tips on the distress micro glaze and distress sprayer. Have you ever tried pan pastels in your art journal? I have some I want to play with soon.

  21. This was adorable and made me want to go to the beach! Love your background – thanks for the distress glaze demo. I had never heard of that. Have fun at your summer home – I’m jealous! 🙂

    big hug

  25. Lovely summer art journal page! I LOVE your background too! It looks like micro glaze is the solution to using watercolors for the background! From your video it seems that in order to seal the whole page you just needed a small amount of micro glaze and this is really great! Thank you for always inspiring us!

  26. What a great art journal layout. I was thinking about buying one of those journals like the one you used in today’s post, now that I have seen it in action I will be putting on my list of things to buy. I am using a regular notebook and I really need to get an actual journal.

  27. Dear Vicky, how do you think, is there any alternative to Big Brush Markers you use to make shadows? They are adorable of course but I don’t have any. Yesterday I tried to make shadows with acrylic paint. And it was not so easy as in your videos 🙂
And another question is where in Greece do you live? 🙂

    1. You can use from watercolors, to pastel pencils or even gelatos to make shadows. This is just how I like to do them. Use what you have and have fun creating!!! Hugs

  28. I can’t agree more with previous posts about the Distress Glaze demo – worth watching for that alone! Thank you so much for sharing that wonderful tip! I always learn something new from you! :))

  29. Vicky, your journals and cards are always that inspiring and awesome. All the techniques you use and combine makes me trying something new. thanks so much for inspiring us all to do more artwork with all the stuff we mostly own already by just combining them together in new ways!

  30. I just fall in love with art journals’s technique since I discover you, Vicky! I like sooo much the colours and any detail you made. As colours you have used it’s easy to understand you are a Mediterranian, as I am 🙂 My daughter 6 yrs old love those colours and she is inspired by you too. Thank you for all . Ciao

  31. I can’t believe how you transformed those seahorses with the grunge stencil and the shading. You’re amazing… I, too, love watching you make your journal pages. Thank you!

  32. I LOVE watching your videos. I really look forward to them. Keep creating Vicki! Thank you for the wonderful inspiration.

  33. Thank you very much for your lovely art journal layout. Just one comment. The microglaze can easily be replaced by white petrol jelly (vaseline). This is very cheap and does the trick as good as the microglaze. Kind regards. I am looking forward to your next art journal video.

  34. hello,
First of all I wanted to say that I love what you’re doing. Thank you for your videos !!
I would like to have a board. For the “paper art” is best to use a Dylusion album or Moleskine Sketchbook?

  35. I love the learning about the micro glaze & the stone to help wash off inks & glue. 🙂 I ordered both & they really work great. 🙂 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing. Your designs are lovey , as always. Really enjoy you post… learn so much & am inspired!
