Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I hope your day is as special as you are!
Today I am sharing an art journal page I made yesterday.
Quote: “If you love the rainbow you gotta put up with the rain”
The most asked question on my comments and emails is where do I find inspiration. Well, when I want to make an art journal I usually start from a quote I like. I have a little notepad where I write them down and wait in the queue to come to life. Now, in this page, I also got inspiration from a new book I got called “Collage Couture” by Julie Nutting. You’ll see it in the video too.
Things I love about this page? The yellow boots and skirt, the lace, the fact that the word “rainbow” has seven letters just like it’s colors, the seven triangles in the umbrella, the stitched letters…
Not sure if you can see it in the photos but the umbrella and her boots are glossy!
These are chipboard letters that I colored using my distress paints. A must have by the way! Hope they come in more colors just like the ink pads. I also added some faux – stitching at the end to make them stand out from the background.
Drawing the girl was easy using the instructions on the book. There is a “13 lines” rule as I call it, that makes everything super simple and fast.

Art journaling is so rewarding! I just love making pages. It is a bit overwhelming at first when you start with the two blank pages looking at you but once you put the first layer of color everything starts to flow. I encourage you to start one! It’s so much fun 🙂

I admit, I´ve never had the guts to make one myself, but I really enjoy them, when I see them made by others and this one is awesome, and I also love your quote on it. It sure fits soo very well here in the Northern Europe the past years, as we´ve had lots of rain here LOL.

Just curious, tho…do your pages ever tend to stick together? And do you ever brush or spray any sort of sealer over the tops of your pages?

The pages I made up to now (they are not that many) do not stick. I don’t know if this one sticks over time, since I have the glossy accents on the umbrella and the boots… I’ve seen others use spray and wax sealers… not sure what I’ll do if it happens, but I’ll share it for sure!
OMG – This is my favorite page so far. And the 20 minutes go by so fast! The lace on the umbrella and the girl are so CUTE! You truly are a wonderful artist . . . I haven’t grasped the whole idea of art journals yet, but I suspect I will catch the bug sooner or later as your videos are so cool. I just don’t have the artistic flair to pull it off. WELL DONE! You are the master!

I noticed you didn’t prime your page with gesso this time. Is that because of the different kind of paint or maybe gesso isn’t always necessary???

I experiment… and now I know that the pages of my journal take distress paint greatly! You need to experiment to find out what works best!

Thanks for sharing your art! Do you need artistic training to draw the images from the book or does it walk you through the drawing? I have a limited ability to draw but the book looks like fun.

This is just a simple masking tape I got from my local store… I think it’s supposed to be used while painting the walls. There is no brand name on it, so I can’t really help you with this. Thanks for your lovely comment.

I’m just trying out art journaling (a move on/addition to cardmaking), and wanted to ask what is probably a rather basic question – will any book do as a basis of an art journal, or will I have to buy a particular sort?
Loved your pages – I’d love the distress paints, but I have acrylics already, so can’t justify 🙁
You can use any book you have! If the pages are too thin then just glue two or three together to have a more sturdy base to work on. Also use gesso on top to cover any images or letters that were printed there already. No need to get the distress paints, just use what you have and have fun. You can built up your supplies slowly.
Vicky this page spread is absolutely beautiful and watching you create it was like taking a journey through wonderland. You are such a talented lady and it looks as if Maria is following in your magic footsteps behind you. Thank you for sharing this treasure.

Hi Vani, I don’t do anything more than what you see me do on the video. I guess applying the matte medium helps keep the surface smooth and with a nice finish. I don’t apply too much, I always use a soft brush and make sure to have a smooth and thin coverage.

There’s something special about your Art Journals! They’re cheery, and upbeat. Not to mention, Inspirational, and VIBRANT! That is why so many people are drawn to your Blog & You Tube. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watch each of your journal videos. My daughter, who is an artist as well, (she went to school for Art), says your work is beautiful, and she watches with me sometimes. The other day we were perusing You Tube for other Art Journalist and we hap upon this one person who was messy beyond belief. I don’t mind messy, as long as the outcome is not messy. But her project was smeared with painted fingertips marks around and over her art work. It was sad really. Her work was nice for the exception of fingerprints.We couldn’t take it and switched over to your channel and were rewarded with your last journal. Oh happy day. Lol. So keep doing whet your doing. You’re becoming a staple in many households here in the

I love rainbows for me they are a symbol of hope all in themselves and I’m a “quote junky”.
I missed the voice over explanation from you I’m personally find it helpful amd your accent relaxing, I’m from the UK myself.
Can I ask about the dylusion range, I’m confused, what is the difference between the distress square blocks inks (the brown one), what is their main use? are they to used with stamps or to blob on paper, edges like you did on this video?
I ask because I was thinking of going for the blober paint ones with the sponge end that u used for the background not the square ones for my first purchase, it’s gonna take me some time to build up supplies. Ekkkk but exciting.
I’ll have to try this and use normal acyclic paints and the supplies I have already and improvise. I responded with another question on your YouTube post so ignore that and I’ll ask again here, do you ever use colored pencils on your mixed media journal pages, l just splurged on 150 prisma color pencils, think I might have made a mistake. Not really sure how to use them in my pages now I have them. Although I could color in the girl l’m going to use and flowers etc..l think I just answer that question, lol. Advice from anyone would be welcome, so glad I found this blog.
Distress ink pads are for stamping as well as adding color to your backgrounds and edges with a sponge. But remember these react with water… think of them as watercolor in a ink cube form. That means you need to be very careful of how you handle everything you put on top or you will end up with smudges. The distress paints with the dabbers that I use are acrylic paints. They dry permanent. Any acrylic paints will do the job. No need to buy everything!
