Happy Sunday! Today I am back with a new art journal page.

I had this quote on my notebook Reading gives us some place to go, when we have to stay where we are. The main idea was to make a layout with a stack of books and some travel themed accents. So here is what I came up with!

IMG_2927

Including breaks it took me a whole day to finish it, but I had such a creative Saturday. The kids were crafting next to me too and you’ll see little hands appear in the video! Fun!

When I started art journaling I watched every related video on YouTube. I learned so much and these are my favorite ladies: Dyan Reaveley, Christy Tomlinson, france papillon, RachO113

They all share so much info for all the different mediums and techniques. But in the end you need to find your own style. So what I am doing is a cardmaker’s approach, I guess. I can’t stay away from my stamps, I love paper piecing and distressing. So all these are incorporated in my page. Also I am not a “messy” or “go with the flow” artist. I like to think ahead and to have a theme on my layouts. Just like I do with my cards, I follow the general idea but things might change in the process.

Saying all that… keep this in mind:

This is your art journal, there are no rules! Make it as messy or as neat as you like! Just put your ideas on paper and have fun!

And I sure had fun! There are moments that makes your crafty heart so happy when you do such pages! Like when I used the modelling paste or when I distressed that little piece of paper with the quote… FUN ! FUN! FUN!

Here are some close-ups:

The books: took me ages to make those paper strips look like books… I still wonder if they do! ha!

IMG_2929

The globe: I googled for vintage globes and printed out on a 6×6 patterned paper.

IMG_2932

The letters: I used a stencil and modelling paste. They are dimensional and gorgeous! I am in love with modelling paste!!!

IMG_2931

The quote: I used every possible distressing technique on the note. All book lovers will agree with me that the quote is so true!

Thank-you for giving us a peak at your creative process.

    1. I found the Java spills rubber stamp on Simonsaysstamps.com – I have been looking for one for quite a while. These are the perfect size. The stock number is JYAO103 /1.4
      hope this helps.

    1. I get everything for the US. It takes a bit longer to arrive but it’s like Christmas every time I open the box! You can’t find such variety and so many supplies anywhere else!

  47. Am trying to find the globe clip art. What website did you download it from? I’m just in love with this page!!! Thank you

    1. oh this was a page I did a year ago…. I can’t remember where I got it… I was just googling around from what I can remember. Just pick a map!

  48. This is awesome! I commented on the YT page, also. The books are amazing, and really I can’t believe how simple you made it look and they actually look like books! I love your pages and have made your channel one of my favorites.

  49. Vicky,
I read almost all the comments of your followers, and I, like them, have been touched by this journal in particular, as I am an avid reader and the quote you wrote resonates to all readers. Do you mind if I copy this journal page. It will not be like yours, but I will do my best to not disgrace your wonderful work. Every avid reader needs this Journal Page in their own personal journal because it speaks volumes on so many levels. Thank you so much for sharing your work. God bless you. Eve

  50. Hi Vicky, I just love your page. Watched a couple of your videos today and just love your style. As I mostly make cards, this style is more me than the very messy ones. I don’t know where to start with them. I have been wanting to make a canvas or page about reading for a while, and have been collecting some quotes on reading on Pinterest in preparation for doing so. May I use your stacking books on my project? Travel themed papers and stamps are also one of my weaknesses, and the quote you used is one of my favourites. Thanks for all the wonderful inspiration you provide. Geraldine.

    1. Thank you for your comment! Of course you can use the books idea on your layout! Just link back to me, where you got inspired if you do post your work. Thank you!!!

  51. CONGRATS FOR YOUR BLOG. I ONLY FIND CUTE IDEAS. I WILL BE BACK EVERY WEEKEND. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR WONDERFUL IDEAS.

  52. I recently found your blog and fell in love with all your art journal pages! I am catching up on all your videos and hope you will continue to share your tremendous talent. I am amazed at how great your books look…this page is truly awesome. Thank you for sharing and teaching. I really enjoy your tutorials!

  53. Dear Vicky, I’ve just found your blog a few days ago and you’ve just so inspired me. You are so talented, the stack of books is amazing. I’m fairly new to art journaling but I’ve already started this in my journal and you’ve introduced me to so many new techniques. Do you mind if I follow your instructions for your book art journal page and share it with friends. I will of course say that the inspiration, techniques and ideas is all yours and link it back to your web page/blog. I don’t have all the supplies you’ve used so have improvised here and there. Many thanks once again. Rhian

    1. Thank you Rhian,
thank you for letting me know. Yes you can recreate it as long as you give credit. Try to add your own touch, it would be more personal and you’ll love it even more!!!!
      all the best

  54. Thank you for your kindness in sharing Vicky – I think I might make mine more of a travel book/journey theme, I love your work. Best wishes Rhian

  55. Your journal pages are so much fun and such an inspiration thank you. Was dying to find out where you got that tissue. Thank you for that also.

  56. I absolutely LOVE thus page! I know this post was completed a while ago but it just speaks to me. Your technique in creating the books, the way you used the tissue paper and distressing ink really worked well on the page. The books look so realistic. I’d like to use this as an idea board for a canvas piece in my living room. Once I have it completed I’ll share. Your work is just awesome. Please just keep posting!

  57. Absolutely an amazing piece of art. The detail is so unique. I love neat and your work is certainly neat and very beautiful. TFS!

  58. The stack of books is ingenious. I am definitely going to scrap lift them and the “reading” quote for my “books I am currently reading” layout. Thank you for sharing.

  59. I have watched this video numerous times and it is still a favorite,
I’ve used your idea in a very basic way for bookmarks and I’m really pleased with them. Thank you for sharing your amazingly talanted art work, I love card making so follow you there as well.

  60. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. In reading your post I see that you come to art journaling from card making…that makes your approach to art very different from other artists I have discovered on You Tube. I second the opinion of the person above who said that this is the BEST art page she has ever watched being made. I feel the same way, even though I come from the messy side of art! I have enjoyed watching one other video by you..the stack of cups..I have now subscribed and look forward to seeing much more of your work. Your books are amazing! Thanks again for the inspiration!

  61. The books look awesome! I love how you curled them to.give them the rounded bindings. Love all the stacks. Gorgeous page. Thank you for sharing!

  62. I have just started watching all the different album and book designs . As I watched the art journals , being put together l wondered what practical use can an art journal be used for?
I then realized these art journals are for creativity of one persons thoughts and feelings and artistic abilities and fun . Then I realized I too am making a journal of my artistic ability , all my zentangle designs I enter into an album .I am doing the same thing . And it serves no practical use , just fun and creativity . Congratulations on your designs and art . I love what you do , thank you for sharing your ideas .
    Pat

  63. Love, love, love your pages. They are so fun and colorful. I watch them over and over and best of all I order a lot of the items you are so kind to list. I bought a number of old books to “alter for my amusement” and your videos make it creativity easy. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Your descriptions are easy to understand, and often make me laugh right along with you.

  64. I absolutely adore your art journal pages and have been inspired to buy a journal of my own. I too am a cardmaker but love the idea of the freedom and creativity that art journaling allows. It will also give me the opportunity to use up some of my crafty stash. I stumbled across your site when googling ideas for the crazy bird stamps but this is such a fantastic idea. I hope you don’t mind but I will be using your idea to make my own ‘books’ along with some of the quotes from the darkroom door Bookworm rubber stamps. Instead of travel as the accompanying theme I will probably add some of my favourite characters spilling from the books; or add cobwebs and ‘dust’ to give the idea of not getting things done because of being enthralled by a book. Now I just need my new journal to arrive. Thanks for all the inspiration – and I’ve only looked at 2 of your videos so far!

  65. Hi Vicky, I don’t know if it’s a problem at my end or actually on the page. Some of the thumbnails for the supplies have a broken link. I was trying to find out what is the paper punch you used to create the “ripped” notepad paper look. Thanks for sharing all this with us. 🙂

  66. I actually think I answered my own question. I watched that part again and I think you are using a hole punching machine (that does that type of hole punching) right?

  67. Thank you Vicky for sharing your prodigious talents and also for your comments on the process of your art work. I have found them so helpful, especially explaining your approach. I have yet to find my style but these comments resonated and have given me something to think on. Thank you.

  68. I just found you on YouTube. You are amazing. Your style is a lot like mine! I love the books! Do you remember what paper pad you used? I’ve been looking for hot air balloons sort of vintage….this pad would be perfect! I checked the supply list….but no luck. Keep on creating! I also like your 1 kit 10 cards videos for SSS. Love love love your work!

  69. I was wondering where you were going with curling the books that way, but they really look like book bindings. I did not see the stamp you used for the book titles. There are many Simon Says Doggies where links might have been.

  70. Hi!! I just found your page and watched this video!! I was looking on the supply list for the papers you used – can you tell me which scrapbook pages you used – I see Kaisercraft in one – which one and did you use just that paper pack to cut the vintage tags from?

    1. Hi Heidi,
this is an old video and most of those collections are discontinued and out of stock.
Just use what you have and be creative !

  71. Love your style and your work is wonderful !! Could you tell me the name and brand of the stamp you used on the reading tag ? It looks like a coffee mark . Thank you for your inspiration !!

  72. I’ am making a journal page with the books and the coffee cup . My friend likes winnie the poo and piglet, so i will make the cup and i’am stamping out winnie and the piglet, to put on the cup. she also collects coffee cups. She is leaving her work place. I’am putting it on a canvas. Thought i would tell you ways I’am doing your page. Thank you for all you do to inspire us. Thank you Linda
